Delta Spirit and Dr. Dog at the Earl - Saturday, September 6
This is the show I’ve been waiting for since…I dunno, since I found out about it.
I first heard of both Delta Spirit AND Dr. Dog on Daytrotter.com a while back (late 2006/early 2007) and immediately became of fan of both. Since then I’ve only seen Dr. Dog - which I believe was at Bonnaroo in 2007 - and they were amazing, but the band I’m super stoked to see is Delta Spirit.
The Sand Diego, CA based band have dates book (and posted) throughout the end of October - so if they are coming to your town (or town near you) do not miss them!
Their very recently released Ode To Sunshine has been extremely well received and creating some HUGE buzz for the band.
If you are in Atlanta, make sure to check both bands out at the Earl tomorrow.

the palin bubble
Annoy the media — insulate Sarah Palin.
But what about the voters? Some of us might want to see her answer legitimate questions, and a sitdown with Hannity won’t count. (And are female GOP strategists required to be obnoxious?)
My New Book
Thursday Afternoon
"You promised you'd show it to me," he reminded me again yesterday afternoon.
I don't know what made him interested in my wedding dress, but he demanded that I show it to him.
After I fetched the dress from the far reaches of our cedar closet and untangled it from its many wrappings, The Mayor asked me to put it on.
The Rooster joined the action too.
"Put it on, Mama!!"
[How odd to slip into one's wedding dress on a Thursday afternoon...]
The dress is too big for me now, but every detail about it reminded me of my wedding day.
I stepped into a pair of high heels so the dress wouldn't drag on the floor and then I paraded past K.
"Will you marry me?" I asked.
"Gladly!" he said with a smile.
The Mayor and The Rooster sat on either side of me on the couch while I showed them our wedding album and told them stories about the day.
They had never seen it before and were fascinated for a whole... oh... five minutes or so before they grew weary of the activity.
[Where is every day the same? Oh, yeah. That would be right here.]
As the children scrambled off the couch leaving me halfway through the album, The Mayor stopped and turned towards me.
My too-big wedding dress slid off my shoulders awkwardly.
The Mayor gave me a long look.
"Mom," he said, "I can see your boobs."

Get a Reciept
There is a stack of cds I am going to take back to the library today. If nothing else, this is something I can talk about other than Sarah Palin.
I give McNapalm credit…he has gotten excitement for his campaign. People are paying attention now, and a star is born. I saw the speech that hockeymom gave Wednesday, and she is quite a performer. If you don’t fact check, it is impressive.
In many ways, the Repubs have taken what the Demoze started and done better. BHO is a Reaganesque triumph of style over substance. Hillary has taken a sledgehammer to the glass ceiling. And now hockeymom has driven a snowmobile through the opening. She will be with us for a while, regardless of the outcome of this election.
I hockeymom credit for one thing. She did this on her own. Hillary is famous because of her husband. Hockeymom is famous for what she has done, and her husband is the decorative spouse.
Back to the cds. The first was “Doc at the Radar Station” by Captain Beefheart. CB is some kind of sidekick to Frank Zappa, who enjoyed moderate success. He has since retired from music and is a painter. “Doc…” was released in 1980, and is a bit past his prime. His shtick gets a bit tiresome after a while, and I probably won’t miss this much after I return it.
He did a show at the Great Southeast Music Hall after they moved to Cherokee Plaza. In those days, I would stop by if there were cars parked outside, and if the second show had started, then I could often get in free to see what was left. I saw a lot of music this way in the seventies. So, the magic band was playing, and I showed up. There were people hanging out in the parking lot, and I talked to someone I knew in high school. You needed to show a ticket to get into the hall, so I went home. Such is life.
I timed it a bit better with the next artist, Patti Smith. The cd is got is her first, “Horses”. The cover is by Robert Mapplethorpe, who was once Ms. Smith’s bf. ( This was when the expression ms. was becoming popular. Someone, who may have been Patti Smith, said in print that ms. Sounds like a sick bumblebee). The music sounds great 30+ years later, and it is easy to see why she created such a buzz. The fact that she still performs…with two kids in her band…is astonishing. That might surprise some people who knew her then.
She played a show in 1979 at a venerable buckhead facility, which was still known as the Capri. It was summer, and the side door was open. I walked in and saw a few numbers. Her current album was “Wave”, and she did that, and “So you want to be a rock and roll star”. Lenny Kaye stood tall and seemed to be in control.
Her bass player, Ivan Kral, was in the band for Iggy Stooge the next year at 688. He came on stage with this white thing coming out of his nose. He did not play the entire show.
There are three more cds, but I am tired of writing. If you want to read more, there are 100 million blogs to satisfy your craving. If you have not had your fill of Palintudes, go here and especially here. People who know her in Alaska seem to have things to say.
This feature may never get posted. Here is more about hockeymom. There is a picture of Todd Palin’s former business partner. He is trying to get his divorce records sealed.
I will return this music in a while, and I WILL GET A CHECK IN RECEIPT. Once I returned some cds, and the scanner did not catch one. I got a phone call later saying that I had not turned in “Shake your Booty”. Yes, it couldn’t be Patsy Cline or quixie’s golden oldies…it was a disco collection called “Shake your Booty”. Fortunately, the cd was on the shelf when I went to straighten out the mess, and the county was no longer mad at me. I learned my lesson…when you return cds to a library, GET A CHECK IN RECIEPT.

5SF: september 9
I just had a realization that was kind of cool… next week is the first anniversary of the five song Friday!! The first one was on September 14th, which is also, coincidentally (massive coincidence) mine and James’ anniversary! This year is our fifth anniversary… it’s crazy how time flies! I can’t believe that I have been doing this for almost a year! Is everyone still enjoying the five song Friday’s? Any feedback at all? I’ll let you ponder that while I get to this week’s music…
Annie - I Know UR Girlfriend Hates Me
[See post to listen to audio]
First, there is something I need to get out right away: I HATE when people spell words in song titles like you’re with just a “UR”. It doesn’t make it more cool, and it doesn’t show that you are hip; it makes it look as if you are too lazy to worry about proper grammar. Ugh. Alright, with that said, I actually have been digging this song lately. I actually heard about Annie quite a long time ago from such power music blogs as popjustice, but perhaps it was the defiant part of me that took over, because I just blew her music off until recently. Well, I finally downloaded her CD, and I’ll admit that I like a few of the songs on it. I don’t think it is mind blowing, but it definitely fun, and something that you can have a good time listening to; regards going to this song especially.
Van She - Kelly
Holy shit! There’s a video! And it came out in 2006? WTF?!?! First thing’s first… Here’s another find from a massive pop blog that I decided to give a listen to (given his enthusiasm, I had to see what was going on!!!). Well, I love, love, love this song, but the rest of the album is just alright for me; it gets a bit repetitive towards the middle, on through the end. However, this song struck me immediately, and I was excited to feature it this week. Much to my surprise (hinted at above), this song actually came out way back in 2006, and hello youtube… there is even a video for it! Big surprise on that one! Either way, the song’s great, and the chorus is super-fun and extra catchy. I’m glad that I read pop blogs… they really give me the goods; which is one of the main reasons why I love doing things like this five song Friday on my own pop-filled blog… share the wealth, right?!?!
Jem - Crazy
[See post to listen to audio]
Jem, you’ve done it again! The first song off of Jem’s upcoming release, Down To Earth (release date, September 16th) leaked a few weeks back, and I must say, as much as I loved her first record, I wasn’t actually digging On Top of The World as much as I would have liked. With her last record being so dynamic and innovative, I had high hopes for her sophomore effort, but by the sound of On Top Of the World, I was worried that I was going to be let down. Cut to this week, and the official release of Crazy as a single on iTunes… yeah, Jem still has it. This song is every bit as energetic and magnificent as her first record. She builds on her sound with this track, and proves that she has more to say with her music. Also, I cannot get enough of the banjo in this song!! Such a great use of a non-traditional pop instrument. Good form, Jem, I can’t wait for the record!
Lily Allen - GWB (Fuck You Very Much)
[See post to listen to audio]
First off, it says fuck a lot in this song, so if that isn’t your cup of tea, you have been warned. I love, love, love Lily Allen, and given the events of this week (RNC), I thought a fun political FU song was appropriate; especially since I only recently heard it. As much as I loved Lily’s first record, I have been chomping at the bit to get more stuff from her, and I was happy to find a few songs last week to satiate my appetite. This song is catchy, and I do think it is cool when people speak up for their political views, because you are always taking a risk; sometimes you get shunned for it (The Dixie Chicks), and sometimes you get praised for it (P!nk). With this silly track, Lily is saying what a lot of young American’s are thinking about our not-so commander and chief, and she will definitely get praises from me for putting it out there. I also cannot ignore the brilliant opening notes that are totally a throwback to the Carpenter’s massive hit Close To You; it really makes me smile to hear it throughout the song. I can’t wait for more new stuff Lily!
Nobody’s Angel - If You Wanna Dance (Thunderpuss Radio Edit)
[See post to listen to audio]
I recently hooked my spin class teacher up with a bunch of “old” dance music that I have sitting on my hard drive, and I literally smiled from ear to ear yesterday when this track came blasting out during class. This song is one of those songs that originally, weren’t very good… Then, a MASSIVE producer (oh how you are missed, Thunderpuss!!!) gets their hands on it, remixes it, and then you have a dance-floor filler that is so much fun that it is hard not to shake your booty all night long. This was exactly what I needed to boost my energy in class, and I was reminded of how much I originally loved this remix. It’s a gem from all the way back in 2000, but to me, it sounds just as great today as it did so many years ago. I can tell you, that if this came on the club, I would need to clear a spot on the floor to break it down… let’s get fierce!
Well, I hope that everyone is having a great Friday, and I hope the weekend is filled with fun as well. Let me know what you thought about this week’s selection, and as always, let me know what you are listening to… you never know when you will see it featured here!!!!

Intimidation vs. BEING LEFT OUT
Then, THEN! I got a notification just a few minutes ago that Kris of Not a Wino is following me. Talk about intimidating!
She so funny and witty (and, of course pretty, but that goes without saying, right)! What if my twits were stupid and boring like "I hate Mondays!" Or "I'm going to the store" or "I'm eating, AGAIN."? BOOORING!
I can't help but think to myself every single time I update even my Facebook status - who really gives a shit ETK? Luckily Jen and Molly seem to care. :) and I know Meg pays attention occasionally. They keep me going, just egging me on and shit. Kind of like here - if it weren't for my dear 1.5 readers I'd probably stop already! Anyway, I still can't help but think re Twitter --who really cares? Do you really think that much of yourself ETK, that someone would give a crap what your random one-liners are? And if you are going to share, why wouldn't you just share it here??? Right? Can't leave anyone out either!
But, then again, so many ppl I know (or stalk) tweet. I'm already following Kim and Kris (how totally stalkerish of me, no?) Maybe I just need to get my ass on board and follow everyone - Molly, B, Maigh. Anyone else out there?
Well, it wouldn't hurt to set it up. Not to my cell but via RSS feed. :) we'll see.

back soon, i promise.
have been in the middle of political convention exile for the last two weeks, but i will be back to regular posting shortly.
in the meantime, in response to reco’s question in the comments on another post about ron paul, i have added a detailed post about why after flirting with it for several years, i left libertarianism behind me to the list of things i want to post about.
also, i have been fooling around with the much-hyped google chrome for a few days and some of my thoughts will be the point of another post.
oh and maybe a potw this weekend.
who knows?

Nibbles: Duck club at Dogwood
Met a friend for lunch at the semi-new Dogwood Restaurant last week. Very nice space and very close to many local businesses so great for lunch if you work downtown. I had a great sandwich: the "duck club," thinly sliced duck on raisin-pecan bread with bacon, lettuce, etc. I would definitely order it again. It was supposed to come with a celery root salad but they were out so I got fries. Tres delish.
